Biological medicines and vaccine manufacturing at Porton Down

Porton Biopharma is a government-owned biopharmaceutical company based at Porton Down, Wiltshire. It developed and manufactured biological medicines using microbial fermentation, including the UK's anthrax vaccine and Erwinase (crisantaspase), an enzyme therapy for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

In March 2025, the Department of Health and Social Care announced that Porton Biopharma would cease manufacturing operations. Erwinase production subsequently ended. The company remains registered as active, although the current operational status of its manufacturing facilities is unconfirmed.
