Founded 2019
Living building materials and microbial construction biotechnology research
Hub for Biotechnology in the Built Environment is a Newcastle and Northumbria University research collaboration developing biologically enabled building materials and environmental technologies.
Its work spans microbial mineralisation, self-healing construction materials, mycelium-based structures, building microbiomes and biological systems for waste treatment.
The partnership established the OME experimental house in Newcastle alongside laboratory and prototyping facilities. Researchers investigate how living systems could reduce construction impacts and support regenerative architecture.
